What are the odds you’ve seen the movie what about Bob? If memory serves it came out in the 90’s. Bill Murray was the star back in his prime. He was seeing a counselor (Richard Dryphus) who was trying to work him through whatever it was, I can’t remember now. In one scene of the movie he’s trying to get Bill Murray on a bus. He says to him “baby step on the bus Bob”. This has always stuck with me. I can’t remember much else from the movie other that the absurdity of the relationship between the two characters. Baby step on the bus Bob however resonated with me on some deeper level I wasn’t really aware of, and it’s served me well over the years.
“Baby steps taken consistently lead up to greater results than huge leaps take only once or twice.” Not sure where I got that from, I think it was from my nutrition course. Regardless of the origins it applies to everything in life, especially reaching health and wellness goals. Taking action leads to motivation not the other way around. Don’t wait for motivation to take action. If you’d like to create some momentum to get where you want to go start looking at baby steps you can take to get there. Doing something consistently is better then doing nothing. The “somethings” add up. A few weeks ago I got home from a particularly long and tiring day and had not yet worked out. I showered and sat down at my desk ready to give up on the idea for the day. Instead I grabbed a set of very light weights and sat in my chair. I didn’t move from the chair. I did curls, presses, kickbacks and rows. I may have even done some oblique dips. It felt like the stupidest most ridiculous thing I had ever done, but it was something. It was overcoming the desire to do nothing and keep moving forward. I walked away from that chair feeling very accomplished that day.
It’s easy to over-analyze (am I right ladies) don’t get stuck with analysis paralysis. We are talking baby steps here. We are picking something and doing it. We are not coming up with the perfect most amazing plan ever. We are baby stepping on the bus. Every day set a 5 min. timer, goal being to take one action that moves you towards your goal. ex. drink one glass of water, eat a piece of fruit, do 3 stretches, mindful breathing. Whatever baby step will advance you is the victory on that day! You can do 5 min. a day for yourself!
