Next week looks different

Next week looks different has been rebounding in my head for the past 24hours. You see a few weeks ago God told me it was time to move on from Twisted. It has been like the long goodbye this week. It has been the first of many lasts. The last Tuesday night I would teach, the last 5am’s I would teach, the last class with a co-worker turned close friend. Friday 5a is where it all began 3 years ago. I think I’ve only missed 2 Fridays since taking over that class. It was hard….I mean really hard. There were flowers, kind words, cards, so many sweaty hugs…the good Amanda hugs (minimum of 20 seconds). I found myself clinging to our members that have become family a little extra tight. I’m not a hugger you see, but on Friday I was, I was an Amanda hugger, I had to tell myself to let go. I just adore these people, and it has been such an amazing season of life. Being a part of their fitness journey has been so cool. I don’t know what is next yet, but knowing God has a better plan that lies ahead, it must be pretty great.

I haven’t done a very good job taking care of myself the past few weeks. Finding balance in life has been hard, coupled with a new injury and some nagging old ones. Putting off getting adjusted has wreaked havoc down my kinetic chain on the left side. So don’t delay get adjusted today! hehe. For serious though, it’s been a weird month, but next week looks different. Next week after I teach my last 2 classes it’ll look different. I’ll have more flexibility in my workout schedule. My routine that has been so full will be a little lighter. I don’t know how long it’ll be like this, but the words from my mom echo in my head. “Take care of yourself in this down time”. I laughed because having down time isn’t so likely. Yesterday P said to me, mom you work so much you never have time to play with me, because you’re always working. Well now, there’s that. We are always together she and I, and it looks like it’ll be that way for the foreseeable future. I do take her statement with a grain of salt, as it’s never enough. Any moms out there relate?? You can spend all day playing and doing what they want for them to look at you and say at bedtime, we never did xyzy today. I also hear here though. Next week looks different. Next week I will adjust my workout schedule to get it back on track. I will continue to figure out how to work around this new injury as I’ve done with all the others through the years. If I’m really on my game I will get my eating back in line. We will find more time to play. I will take care of me so I can take care of we.

One other thing that leaving Twisted has shown me is how bad I am at letting people in my life know how they impact me, and how I feel about them. This will also be something I take away from this season of life and strive to be better at.

Next week looks different. Different can be scary. God has told me it was time, He has not told me what is next. I’m a creature of habit, He knows this, He created me, I don’t like not knowing. What doesn’t look different is His love and promise for me. His will for my life and this next season may be unknown in this moment, but He is not. He is love, He is faithful, He is hope, He is with us. His voice is known. I choose to seek Him and His will, to listen to and for His voice. The Bible says the sheep will know their shepherds voice. Robert asked me if I was having second thoughts. How can you second guess your creator? I’ve been there and done that, it never goes well. Point a to b becomes a half way around the world treck vs. a straight line. He told me to go to Ninevah and I did. I’m not trying to get eaten by a big fish. He has been so good at confirming things to me almost as the questioning thought was crossing my mind. He’s so cool. The way He communicates to and through others. Walk the path, the narrow path, don’t fall into the ditches on either side of the road. Satan doesn’t care which one you fall in, so long as you fall. Find your people. Next week may look different, but God and His promise to us do not.

You’re looking small today…

Not long after walking in from teaching the 5a my husband said the words “you’re looking small today”. Having eaten pizza last night and taking note of my chins this morning, I thought hmmm…really? When I looked up I realized he was speaking to the dog and not to me. Upon looking at the dog I thought, no, no he’s not…and seriously?? The funny thing about the whole interaction is I don’t care to look small. I don’t know why it was even a thought in my brain. The brain is funny like that. Y’day something VERY out of character came out of my mouth and hurt someones feelings. As I reflected on it I truly have no idea where the statement even came from. Maybe a defense mechanism to avoid the feelings I’m feeling about moving on from the gym? Not sure, I just know that after I apologized and hugged this sweet soul I still can’t figure it out. Point of that story being to emphasize again, the brain is a funny thing sometimes. It can hold us back or allow us to propel forward, and sometimes spew out things that make no sense.

Now back to this whole small thing. I talk about often how peoples journey in the gym almost always starts with weight loss. If you stick with it long enough it shifts into something so much bigger (and better imo) that can really stick with you for life. I don’t care about being small persay, I do care about how I feel, and sometimes I feel big, sometimes I feel fat. Often times I still see that girl who couldn’t run a mile in high school, or made horrendous food choices for years and it showed. The brain is tricky ya’ll…I mean that. Right before I turned 40 I made the decision to switch gyms so that I could focus on bone density and muscle growth. As we age we lose both, and I knew that it needed to be a focus. One of the things that has developed from that switch is the love for lifting heavy things. I always had it, and I toyed with it when I was at orange, but it has really ignited in the past couple years. Really the only reason I should care about looking small is if I have some “big boy” weights in my hands! I want to look strong. More importantly I want to FEEL and be strong.

If someone has lost a lot of weight I will NEVER start the conversation with wow you look great. Here’s the reason why, sometimes a cold hard truth if you will. You have no idea why/how they have lost weight, it may not be the result of a healthy action. Just because they’re hitting the gym doesn’t mean that’s why. When you start discussing these things, often times you may find there are other reasons. Here are a few that I have experienced or heard of as an example. Diabetes (and other diseases), weight loss shots, waaaayyyy under eating, eating disorder relapse, fad diet…the list goes on and on and on. So when I see someone who has clearly lost weight you will likely hear me say “wow, you must feel great”. This journey that may start with aesthetics is truly about so much more. For me personally I want to feed the “so much more”. As an upside the aesthetics will likely follow.

So today as you set out about your day, try to get your brain in check. Look at those goals and see if they’re healthy mentally and physically. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight and pursuing that, after all the body is a temple. We should seek to maintain it as such. Clear out the cob webs in the corners, set out the fine china and linens, eat the cleaner food, drink the water and pick up those heavier weights. If you’re like me your brain needs as much training as your body, maybe even a little more. Set up those good daily habits, get in the Word, surround yourself with those who will lift you up, serve someone else. Be the light. Seek God and His will. Share the good news. If you don’t know Jesus lets have coffee.

Overhauled!

When I started this site back in 2020 I had planned on starting personal training and small group training in the area. Then the gyms began to reopen. I started down the path as an instructor at Twisted cycle. It was a rocky road getting started, but at the end of it have been some really amazing times. I have met the most fantastic humans, and have had the privilege to come alongside them on their fitness journeys. It has been such a blessing to me in so many ways. A few months ago I hit my 600th class, plus a few more from a different franchise. All of that to say, I never followed through on the initial intent of this site. While I may still do something at some point as I start to pursue other fitness passions, for now I’m going to turn it into a blog of sorts. This is where I’ll talk about my favorite things, workouts, pursuits, goals, lessons learned and most importantly faith. So if you like the sweaty selfies, pictures of the latest shoes being tested, progress videos of lifts being perfected, meal prep and pr’s feel free to tag along for the ride. 🙂

Running tips!

With the pandemic on the loose many gyms are closed across the world, people are working from home and many are hitting the pavement. As runners this presents some new challenges for us. Parks or trails we have previously run are crowded with walkers and families looking for an escape and sidewalks are also busier. While this is an amazing silver lining in this otherwise dark cloud, it brings to light some things we as runners need to consider. Safety, smarts, planning and common courtesy.

SAFETY!!!

It’s IMPERATIVE that we run safely and smartly. A few things I’ve learned over the years and in recent weeks are as follows. Go early. Yea it may sting a little in the beginning to get up early, but you know what it’s totally worth it. With the weather warming up it’s cooler, you don’t have to wear greasy sunscreen, it’s quiet, there are way fewer cars on the road, so no inhaling exhaust fumes, birds chirping, all the good feels. With that said you’ll need to plan a little more. In the winter months you have to learn how to layer properly so you aren’t dying of heat stroke 2 miles in. This year when it was cold I learned it took 1 mile for my body to heat up, and 2 for my hands. Then around mile 4 I’d start to get cold again. This taught me how I needed to run safely on colder mornings. When you go early make sure you have on bright clothes, and not just your cute top, but your outer layers too. Most of my outer layers are black, so that neon yellow shirt doesn’t do me much good when under the black. There are still people out on the roads in the early morning hours, and odds are good they are not looking for or expecting to see you. It’s also helpful keep your phone flash light on, or grab a little light. You may want this for in between street lights anyway to make sure you can see the ground in front of you. Being able to see is another key thing. If you head out before it’s dark you could wear a head lamp, or get those little lights for your shoes. Wal-mart and I’m sure other places also have this little magnetic strobe light for like five bucks. You clip it on your pants so cars can see you.

If you’re a female I’d also advise on some sort of protection. Many tasers have little flash lights on them, which kills 2 birds with one stone. When I first started running I stuck mace just inside my bra where I felt I could get to it quickly if need be. Do some research and figure out what works best for you. Guys, be sure you know how to protect yourselves too.

Please I beg of you, ALWAYS and I cannot stress this enough (as I see it every single time I come across other runners) run with one ear bud out. I get that running is a way to disconnect from the world, fall into your pace, get out some stress and anxiety, but for the love of everything holy do not run with both earbuds in and your music blaring if you’re on or will be crossing a street. I tell my kids all the time whether you’re the person on foot or behind the wheel assume the other person is not paying attention, because odds are good THEY’RE NOT!! Aside from cars potentially hitting you, let’s face it this world is not safe. You make it significantly easier for someone to get the jump on you if you can’t hear them. Just be aware of your surroundings. On the note of crossing streets, yes we have the right of way, few drivers don’t acknowledge that. So when you’re coming up to a street crossing slow your pace and start looking in allllll directions. If you’re by a grocery store, you may as well just stop and walk across. Every time I’ve almost been hit on foot, like really close calls it’s been on a Saturday morning by a grocery store. People turning right rarely look right. Next time you get in the car pay attention and see if you’re on of them. I am, and didn’t realize it until I almost got hit by someone coming out of a shopping center that flew through a red light and yield sign when I was in the crosswalk. That cute little triangular sign is just there for show these days. Yea, I had the right of way but it wouldn’t have mattered much when I was lying under his car. So as much as it may pain you to add a few seconds to your overall run time, take them. If you can pick a route that has less street crossings, and stays away from busier places, it may be a better fit if you don’t like having to stop for others.

PLANNING

Some days it’s nice just to go wherever the wind takes you, embrace it do it, see what happens, just know yourself. Know when to push for more and when to listen to your body. I found early on that I do better when I back myself into a corner. So a down and back route as opposed to a loop route or a way I could sell myself short and cut out early helps me keep my distance. I’m not as bad about this as I used to be because I set myself up for running success now. I’ve learned what it takes for me to love my runs, and what I need to avoid. Know these things about yourself. Pay attention to when you come back in the door feeing invigorated or when you hate life. Could be the time of day, what you were wearing, what/when you ate last. These are important things to know about you when you set out. Set yourself up for success. Wardrobe is big, staying cool when it’s hot, warm when it’s cold. Know the clothes that make you feel great and allow you to move. Stay hydrated. Are you goig to listen to something? Music, podcasts, church services? Whatever the case may be have it loaded and ready to go on your phone, so you can listen and be focused on your surroundings as opposed to messing with your phone while out pounding the pavement. If you have to run in the street make sure you are extra aware. If a car is coming and you can move off into the grass safely do so (just don’t roll and ankle), or on the other side of the white line. If you’re the car, don’t be a jerk because you think a runner shouldn’t be in the street (and no I’m not talking middle of the road), go wide if you can, and if you can’t slow down. If we work together everyone can be out and about doing their thing safely. It dawned on me one day after years of running, outside of that shopping center when I came within inches of being hit by a guy running a red light just how drastic things would change if he’d hit me. Not only for me but for him as well. I wouldn’t be able to take my kids to school because I’d be likely recovering for who knows how long, cook dinner, walk, run? Who knows what the outcome would have been other than not good. He’d be faced with charges of driving recklessly, possibly vehicular homicide if he’d killed me. My kids would be motherless, he could end up in jail, affecting his family, all because he needed groceries and I need exercise. It’s crazy! So let’s all pay a better attention and be aware and courteous of those around us whether we are on foot or behind the wheel. So plan your wardrobe, your route, and your platlists! Plan to succeed! Plan to be safe! Or at least consider them maybe, and be free to go wherever the wind takes you!

New to outside running?

A couple things if you’re taking to pavement for the first time because the gyms are closed. Watch your footing. So much pavement is broken and cracked. You don’t want to roll and ankle unnecessarily. There will be hills, lots and lots of them as your miles increase. My biggest tip for running hills is don’t look at the hill. Crazy right? For me I find it’s better to be looking ahead slightly, for instance 2-3 sidewalk blocks ahead so I can see where my feet will be falling (and not the top of the mountain). Making sure pavement is even and debris will roll my ankle. I’m not saying don’t look up and pay attention to your surroundings, just don’t look at the top of the hill…unless that’s good for you. Maybe it’s better for you to see the top getting closer; again this comes to learning and knowing yourself. If it looks like a looming mountain try a few feet ahead and see if that helps. When you get to the top and you think you’re going to die, try to hang on for another 30 seconds or so before your stop running. You may just find you don’t have to stop, and you get a little bit stronger. If you’re running on trails roots will be the biggest obstacle. They hide under gravel and pine straw, which can also be slippery. Downhill’s can be rutted from water runoff, so keep an eye out to keep your ankles safe! Also if running in nature, know what animals you may encounter. Mama deer may seem sweet, but I’ve been told they’ll charge if feeling threatened. Are there coyotees in your area? Do they mess with humans?

Sidewalks tend to be more sloped that streets, so if you find a hip or knee is bothering you, it could be from running at a wonky angle you may not have noticed. When increasing your mileage do it slowly. A million years ago before I knew about the slow 10-20% increase I’d just add a cul-de-sac here or there to my route. Hit a street an extra time to build up, going a little bit further. The important thing is again to know your body.

BE COURTEOUS!

Outside of not jumping in front of cars, or running over runners a few other thoughts on common courtesy. If you’re a gum chewer, don’t toss it where someone can step into it. I saw this all over a park near my house. I don’t want your gum on my shoes just like you don’t want mine on yours. If you’re a spitter, shoot for the grass. No one really wants to run through yours spit either, kinda nasty. If your furry friend is accompanying you, pick up after him/her. NO ONE wants that on their shoes, it’s just nasty.

MORAL OF THE STORY

So the moral of the story here is, know yourself, be safe, do some pre planning and pay attention to one another. 🙂 Most of all HAVE FUN!!! Stay safe people and log those miles!!

Favorite things 2019 edition

Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a wonderful and safe ushering out of the old decade and in with the new! I meant to post this yesterday, well a couple weeks ago actually, but hey that’s life right! So here we go a few of my favorite things that have helped me along the way last year.

I should probably preface the post by saying, I’m pretty cheap. I HATE, and will not pay full price the vast majority of the time. With that said ff you know me then you probably already know I’m a HUGE fan of gear that helps to get you to where you want to be. I’m all for spending the money on quality. My first lesson in this was shoes. I cannot say it loud enough. DON’T CHEAP OUT ON SHOES!!!! <— this would be in red if I could figure out how to change the font color. Whether you are running or cross training it all can start and end with the feet. The feet could be the most underappreciated body part, most people don’t like them, yet they’re pretty important. You have to have a good base of support. You need to be in the right shoes to run. Don’t just head outside without having being armed with some sort of information about yourself and your shoes. Set yourself up for success, running is tedious at first. If you’ve done this already have you experienced any of these? Shin splints, lower back pain, knee pain? These are pretty common when you’re in the wrong shoe. I’m a mess, bad everything, but my shoes save me and help allow me to continue doing what I love. I have several pairs I rotate through to keep things fresh for my body. My running shoes are for running. My retired running shoes, end up as my cross trainers or around towners. So with allll that said (sorry bit of a tangent I know) this year my shoe of choice has been Mizuno. The waveknit R2 has been my go to. Worth noting I’m a level 5 neutral. If you run and you don’t know what that means, pop into a running store and get yourself checked. It takes maybe 10 min. and could save you body a lot of pain. If you’re local big peach or road runner sports are good for this. I did have to size up a half in these which is not the norm. for me. I have two pairs of these and have run 3 or 4 half’s this year right out of the box. Neither of them needed a breaking in period, which I have noticed to be the case when you find something that actually does fit right and is of good quality. I recently tried on the newest generation of these, and they did feel a bit different. I will likely scour the internet and stock up on this version since I know they’re ahhhhmmmaaazzzginnngg.

Find the right shoe for you!

In the garment department there are a few things I could def. not live without as a runner. This year I finally bit the bullet and purchased some Born primitive shorts I’d been eyeing for several years but again am super cheap. Actually Robert got the ball rolling for mother’s day with these. Under armor was my starting point and my go to for a long time and as my distances increased the shorts started giving me issues. My husband was sweet enough to pull that trigger and I’m sooooo thankful he did. They have several versions of their shorts. The renewed vigor booty shorts are what have worked the best for me. The material is a little bit heavier than your typical spandex shorts, and I think that is part of what help them to not ride up. I’ve put several hundred miles on the pairs I have since May, and never once had an issue with any of them. I even soaked a pair and went for a run in them in preparation for the Spartan, and they were still great! They have worn well so far, with no issues or defects. The only thing that’s rubbing off is the inside label with the size, which is no big deal to me, just means I’ve been working hard in them. The rise and grind are a little bit longer, and have a pocket on each side. I have just started with these, so I don’t have a ton to report on them yet, other than they seem to be good. The other pair I’ve just started with are the double take. These are INCREDIBLY soft and comfortable but do ride up some. They also have really great sports bras, which are super cute and comfy too! Best part is they’re owned by a military family, and made in the U.S.

Next up on the list are my headphones. 2 summers ago my husband and I got the Bose Soundsport. They are bluetooth and “wireless” but are tethered together. They do have a fully wireless pair, but I had concerns about losing one, so I went with these instead. Full disclosure I did have to have them replaced, but they took care of them well after the guarantee period. The sound quality is great; the fit is nice and snug once you learn how to put them in. It’s opposite of what you’d think they twist back as opposed to forward. Once I got that through my noggin the worked like a dream. My sister has a pair of the untethered wireless ones and loves them, and has had no issues. I’m all about promoting a company who stands behind their product. Best deals I’ve found on them is in the Outlet shoppes of Atlanta, Bose store.

My shirts and pants vote goes to Nike this year. They have a great run tight in capris and full length that have a drawstring, zip pocket on the back, and a phone pocket on the leg. I picked these up when I was pregnant for the first time. I needed something with a draw string to help with my ever changing body. The draw string has been a saving grace post baby too, as I’m a square….for real I am square. No 36, 25, 34 here like sir mix a lot raps about. I’m super hard to fit, and stuck between sizes. It’s nice to be able to ties those puppies down tight at the beginning of the run. Full disclosure the phone in the leg pocket pulls down a bit when running, but I feel as though that’s probably the case with any of them (if you’re square). Again, this is where the drawstring is so effective. It’s actually more difficult to find workout pants with a draw string than you’d think. The one’s I picked up were at the outlets and are usually $30-50 depending on the sale they’re having. They are the Epic Run tight similar to this link. The train tanks have been really great too, also found at the outlets.

In the equipment world I am totally 100% in love with this bar! The Bodyrock Bodybar is so functional for at home use. I did however learn the hard way that it does not fit 1″ plates. The plates they sell with it are just slightly larger. Thankfully my husband was able to bring it to work and a co-worker fix it for me. If you do purchase it, I’d advise getting the plates with it. They’re squared off which keeps the bar from rolling when you set it down. They’ve really thought of everything it seems on this one. The circular handles on this lil’ fella rotate, making it’s uses quick and easy. A couple clicks and it switches up your move. I’m finding it to be helpful in navigating an injury. If what I’m doing hurts, I can usually adjust a click or two and work around it more easily. I also have the sandbag, and the weighted vest. This is another company that did right by me this busy shopping season. I was sent the weighted vest on accident instead of the sandbag, and they told me to keep the vest. You don’t have to tell me twice to keep an extra piece of workout gear! Ok, maybe she did because I felt bad keeping it. We all make mistakes after all, and it was no big deal on my end.

Another game changer in the run game this year has been the Koala clip. Honestly I think it could be helpful in many areas of life. I picked this up for the spartan. I was running it solo and had one kid at a meet and another at a tournament. I was over an hour away and needed to be accessible in case of emergency. Was one of those weekends where everything overlapped, spread way out across the state and not many were around. This thing handled beautifully for the Spartan. I think with a couple tweaks it could be adapted to be even better for the OCR world. In any event it’s just a great concept. If you’re over the running belts, arm bands, or phone pulling down your pants, give this a whirl. I got the basic one, and even though it doesn’t claim to be waterproof, it did an amazing job, when I came off a mud mound and ended up unintentionally fully submerged. I had my phone in a Ziploc inside of the koala clip, and the baggie was not wet when I frantically opened it to check for water. I’m guessing it’s probably made to be sweat resistant, but that’s just an assumption on my part.

Last up my most favorite piece of gear is my Garmin 645. There is a music and a non-music version. I opted for the non-music version after doing some research on it. The music version seemed to have some kinks needing to be worked out based on reviews post release. The tech has since then been put into the 245 as well. I personally was not as impressed with the 245 when I trialed it, but if you’re looking for a decent running watch, it’ll def. get you there. You can get the 645 for under $300 on Amazon currently. My favorite feature on this is that it shows you your current mileage on the face. This helps me to keep on track for my weekly mileage goals. It also tracks several different type of workouts, rowing, indoor/outdoor biking, strength training, cardio, etc. You can also add things like trail runs, and yoga.

Mom life

It’s Monday, which means the week gets started off with a 5am workout, which also means the alarm goes off at 3:55. In an effort to avoid a 5pm nap yesterday, I did not take the phone back when my youngest grabbed it saying “pone…pone…pishers, pishers!!” On the rare occasions she’s allowed to have my “pone” it’s on the lock screen where she can do no harm, or in the camera where I will later delete many many ceiling pictures. She happened to get her hands on it when it was unlocked. It was then I noticed she was in my alarm clock. Quickly I grabbed it back I accidentally changed the time to 4:55, but I caught it, phew. Disaster diverted, one simply cannot start the week off in deficit after all. Much later I double checked the alarm icon was showing and went night night. This morning I woke up to the smell of coffee. That’s not right, my coffee brews when my alarm goes off, I shouldn’t be smelling it. I looked at my phone, and it said 4:47. WHAT?!!?!?! I should be gone!! Frantically I texted the gym to tell them I was on my way for class, brushed my teeth, threw on my clothes, which thankfully I lay out the night before. This will be one of my tips for setting yourself up for success in an upcoming blogpost. In any event, this is the mom life isn’t it? We try to keep these tiny humans, and not so tiny humans on track, as well as running a household, working, maintaining relationships, and hopefully carving some time out for ourselves. In the case of this tiny human she is the most challenging of my children. She may be a hair like her mother. While she has some very admirable qualities that will no doubt serve her well later in life, it makes for some crazed moments for me. I can’t count the number of times I’ve texted her father and told him he needed to come home to deal with her, because I was at my wits end. Never has a human made me more crazy and in love at the same time. I joke (half heartedly) that she keeps me dangling over the edge ready to let me go at any moment. The truth is, she just doesn’t know she’s little. She has no idea that she’s not supposed to be able to do the thing that all the big people do. Mom life is crazy of that there is no doubt. Make sure that you’re carving out some time for yourself, whether it be a workout, devotional time, coffee or tea with a friend. Little moments here and there that you can look forward to when the crazy kicks in. My favorite part of the day is my coffee and devotional. I shoot to start the day off every day like this, even if it means getting up between 5 and 6 to beat the kids up. It’s always worth it to me. In fact it seems like on the days I do try to sleep in, and don’t have this time, the day goes awry. Today I did yoga, just 30 min of p90x3. The majority of that time she screamed at her toys out of frustration (the breyer horse kept getting stuck in her shopping cart) right in my face, or planted herself under me during cat/cow, or vinyasa. After I got done I joking posted that there was nothing more relaxing that yoga with a screaming toddler, and how I was feeling refreshed and renewed. Thankfully it’s my runs that relax and refresh me, not yoga. We all have a million stories about the kids being nuts, which is why it’s so important to have some sort of outlet! What are you doing good for yourself today? You deserve it, and they do too. No frazzled mommies! You love them, but be sure to take the time to love yourself!! Schedule it if you have to!

Hopefully by “dress up” they mean put on workout clothes. 🙂

Goals

Good morning everyone! Hope your day is going fantastically so far. It’s a frigid frost covered morning here in Ga. which means it’s a good time to talk goals. So, let’s talk goals. When I was working out at orange they gave us cards to fill out. “In 2017 I will…..” If memory serves they gave them to us at the New Year and mailed them to us in April. I was pretty pumped about this, and promptly came home and typed up a list, cut it out and taped it to my card. Of course when I turned it in the next day, there were some chuckles. Perhaps this will explain why….

I’m all about trackable progress, so this was pretty exciting for me. I still remember right after turning in my card being on the rower and one of my coaches standing behind me in the lobby watching my watts and time. She knew my aspirations, and was right there waiting to help me get there. In any event, I set myself some pretty lofty goals that year. I’m not even sure how many of them I hit. That’s how life is sometimes. Sometimes our goals get derailed or temporarily pushed back. Sometimes, we bite off me that we can chew. Other times, we are able to knock them out, reset and keep pushing. Wherever you are with your goals, keep pushing toward them, and know some will come quickly and some will not. Sometimes you’ll achieve things that weren’t even on your radar. The most important thing about setting goal is that they are SMART goals. Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Yes, this is straight out of the NASM text book. Now some of my goals (most all) were just thrown up on that little card, with no real plan to obtain them. After all I worked out right? So it would just happen. Eh, not so much. When you’re setting your goals keep the SMART principle in mind. Be specific. I want to run my first 5k. Great, when? How will you achieve that? Ummm…by running and working out? Ok, good start, how many days a week? Great, what will you do? Is a 5k attainable? Yup, sure is! Is losing 30lbs by the company Christmas party next week? Nope. So don’t set yourself up for failure, it’ll getcha nothin but let down! See what I did there? Think your goals through. When I started running races, I’d set myself two time goals. One would be something I was pretty sure I could easily attain, and another would be something way out of the park. Like my 24min 5k goal. Let’s keep in mind (for those of you who skipped the about me tab) I was the kid they pulled off the track in high school during the mile run because class was over. Also, worth mentioning, I was a pretty competitive softball player growing up. I did not however put much effort into running the bases. With that my nickname became swift wind (any she-ra fans out there) Swifty for short. Sooooo a 24min 5k is pretty much insanity at it’s finest when it comes to this girl. Except its not. Wouldn’t you know I came so close to hitting that time last sat? Way closer than I’d have ever thought possible, and to boot I was only 12 seconds behind my husband (who’s really a natural born athlete) with only one person in between us! As if these things weren’t enough, I took home the masters award. This was never a goal or even on my radar, it was just an impossibility in the ol’ noggin. So moral of the story, set many goals, keep at it, and believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself find someone who will do it for you. It may take longer than you think, but you’ll get there! #noexcuses #makeithappen These are my favorite hashtags!
